Project Description:
Latino agricultural migrant workers are marginally incorporated into American society and are in need of assistance in various areas of life. Despite their resilience, this population is characterized by low educational attainment, limited English proficiency, and limited knowledge of American institutions. This project will pilot test the effectiveness of using television broadcasting to educate Latino migrants in southwest Michigan about key institutional functions and processes in order to facilitate their integration within U.S. societal institutions. The following seven videos produced by University Extension at Iowa State University for this population will be used: taxes, healthcare, education, finances, public assistance, immigration the legal system. The project will use a mixed methods approach that includes a 2 x 2 quasi-experimental design and qualitative interviews with participants. Two groups of 35 adults participating in the Summer Migrant Programs at Van Buren Intermediate will participate in the project. TV DOS 2 will broadcast instructional videos from the facilities of WLLA Channel 64 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to homes in the area. The specific aims are to:

  • Develop assessment instruments for each of the videos used.
  • Assess knowledge enhancement among participants.
  • Compare the level of knowledge increases between native and immigrant migrant workers.

Results of the project will inform ways by which to use television broadcasting (and other electronic technologies) to educate Latino migrant workers. Positive results will be used to seek funds to promote English-language acquisition among this population.
