Project Description:
In collaboration with Wayne County 4H Youth Development, this proposed study examines urban African American adolescents' and their families' media use and the impact of a media literacy program on their media use in the home milieu. Specifically, our first objective is to understand urban African American adolescents' media consumption patterns, their parents' awareness of media influences, and the interaction between parents and adolescents regarding audio-visual and digital media. Our second objective is to increase media literacy of urban African American adolescents and their parents in the domains of media violence and media persuasive techniques and help parents become more effective mediators in their children's audio-visual and digital media use. The proposed study consists of three phrases. In Phrase One, we will conduct individual interviews and focus group discussions with both adolescents and their parents to provide understanding of their media consumption, media literacy level, parental mediation of media consumption, as well as issues and conflicts between parents and their children in media consumption. The data collected in Phase One will contribute to the development of a media literacy education program for urban African American adolescents and their parents in Phase Two. The program will include four units of media literacy modules on violence and persuasive intent in audio-visual and digital media for both adolescents and their parents and will be piloted with a small group of participants. In Phase Three, we will conduct a quasi-experimental study to evaluate the effectiveness of the media literacy program.
