Project Description:
Adequate diet and nutritional intake is especially important for children during early development in the preschool years. All children are at risk for poor diets, but especially those in families with limited incomes. Standardized protocol for nutritional risk assessment and intervention during well child visits will help early detection and intervention for this high risk population children ages 1-5 years. The purposes of this study are: 1) to explore the current nutrition assessment protocols and anticipatory dietary guidance practiced by health care providers (HCP) and their perceived needs for improvement; 2) to explore the expectations of parents for nutrition screening and counseling from HCP; and 3) to develop, test and evaluate a set of nutrition risk assessment protocols to detect quickly nutritional risk and of developmentally appropriate anticipatory dietary guidance for parents of preschool children. Methods include in-depth interviews with HCP and parents of preschool children at two clinics (Well Child Clinic and the Child Health Care Clinic in Ingham County), and guided observation of well child visits. The anticipated product of this study is a set of protocols and anticipatory guidance to help conduct adequate nutritional assessments focusing on key nutrition components within time constraints of a busy practice during the well child visit.
