Project Description:
Many issues remain in the application of evidence-based treatments into practice. The purpose of this research project is to investigate the effectiveness, acceptability, and integrity of an evidence-based parent and teacher-training program within an at-risk, community-based Head Start program. Eight "at-risk" classrooms will be identified for involvement in this project based on classroom norms found from the completion of a universal screening procedure (N=1400 students across 87 classrooms) involving the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) parent rating scale. Four classrooms will be assigned to a control condition. Four will be assigned to receive the teacher and parent training programs. Effectiveness data will be gathered across three levels: the child (N= 120), the teacher (N=24), and the classroom (N=8). Acceptability will be measured via a standardized treatment evaluation measure. Integrity will be calculated based on intervention homework completion rates and worksheets completed within the self-administered manuals. Study results will be disseminated to Head Start staff and administration. In addition, findings will be shared with state and national constituents. Additional funding sources will be sought to carry out the universal implementation of these interventions across all Head Start classrooms affiliated with Capital Area Community Services, Inc and other regional programs. In addition, funding supports will be sought to follow these at-risk preschoolers into early elementary school to more closely examine academic and behavioral outcomes.
