Learn about FACT's grant program and research projects

The Families and Communities Together (FACT) Coalition has awarded $160,000 in grants to four research projects that focus on preventing childhood overweight, domestic violence, sexual harassment among high school students, and literacy about genetics research and its implications.

“This year has been an outstanding year for the FACT competitive grant program,” says Janet Bokemeier, FACT co-director, “The grant winners were the best from among an excellent pool of proposals, and we are eager to follow the work of the investigators as their projects unfold. “We believe each new project has great potential to create significant scholarly and community impacts as well as result in substantive research and outreach efforts.”

The 2004 awards are part of FACT’s annual competitive grant program, which has invested more than $1.7 million in research and outreach projects throughout the state since 1999. The goal of the program is to support cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research projects that address the health and well-being of children, youth, and families and build partnerships with communities.

Bill Davidson, university distinguished professor from the Department of Psychology, leads the grant review. The review is a meticulous NIH-styled process involving a diverse panel of campus and Extension faculty who thoroughly read and rate the proposals, engage in energetic and thoughtful dialogue, and select the projects that best merit funding.

“Dr. Davidson has provided great leadership in conducting the proposal review,” says Bokemeier, “and FACT is grateful to the review panel for the expertise and energy they devoted to the selection process.”
