Project Description:
MSU and the Michigan Department of Community Health’s Women,
Infants, and Children Division (WIC) are evaluating the MSU
Extension/WIC collaborative Mother-to-Mother Peer Counseling
Program (MTMPCP). Breastfeeding rates for low-income women
are significantly lower than for higher-income women while
their infants experience a higher mortality rate and poorer
health outcomes. The MTMPCP seeks to change this trend by
targeting women eligible for WIC and providing one-on-one
breastfeeding support through women from the community (peer
counselors), who have breastfeeding experience. This investigation
will consult peer counselors and participants to evaluate
and identify effective components of the MTMPCP. Investigators
hope to demonstrate the program’s effectiveness, strengthen
its operation, and contribute to the body of knowledge on
using peer counselors in breastfeeding support programs.
