“American Indian Elders Parenting their Grandchildren: Three Major Factors Influencing Their Roles”

Year Awarded: 2003
Project Leaders:

Suzanne L. Cross, Ph.D., Associate Professor, School of Social Work

Project Description:
This qualitative study will be conducted to assess three major factors in the construct of American Indian Elders who are raising their grandchildren. The factors include the impact of historical trauma, the culturally grounded traditional role of elderhood, and the influence of the Indian Child Welfare Act on the grandparents’ decision to parent their grandchildren. Also, the Beck Inventory Scale will be used to assess signs of depression in the grandparents. Twenty-five face-to-face, individual interviews and (10) focus groups of eight members each will be conducted within a 14-month period. The focus group sessions will be held at congregate meal sites and the individual interviews will be conducted at the elders’ center or the homes of the elders. The investigators will travel to the American Indian communities throughout Michigan to contact and conduct interviews and focus groups.
