Youth Development Through Physical Activity and Nutrition Education

Year Awarded: 2000
Project Leaders:

Crystal F. Branta, Department of Kinesiology; Robert Benham, Department of Education; Martha Ewing, Department of Kinesiology; Sharon M. Hoerr, Department of Food Science & Human Nutrition Building.

Project Description:
This project will provide youth two different opportunities to learn sport-related skills by establishing an after-school enrichment program grounded in systematic instruction in physical activity. This physical activity will improve their motor skill development, levels of physical activity, nutrition behaviors and self-esteem and commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Partnering up with Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), MSU, specifically the departments of Kinesiology and Food Science and Human Nutrition, will build upon existing collaboration between schools and the YWCA as that community organization already conducts after-school programs at the schools in a variety of classes.

Recent Developments:
The YWCA, which is an organization that runs after school programs in many Lansing schools, has indicated that they want to be involved in any additional research and programmatic opportunities.

Dr. Branta has presented at two national conferences (Motor Development Research Consortium in 2001 and 2002.

Nutrition and fitness activity can be successfully taught in an after school environment. Dr. Branta has helped write a curriculum for 8-11 years old which is entitled Jump Into Foods and Fitness that is being published by MSU Extension.
